In embracing technology for smart and intuitive education, St. Sylverter’s College Kandy launched the XOLO Smart Classroom platform, first of its kind in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The event was graced by Hon. Sarath Ekanayake, The Chief Minister of Central Province, Mr. T. R. S. XOLO powered by Cloud Smart School, a subsidiary of CodeGen International (Pvt) Ltd., focuses on invigorating students to be innovative and exemplary result oriented citizens of the future.  Just-in-time learning, Problem-solving techniques and Learn-ability scoring, are some of the unique aspects of this tested, proven concept, now deployed at St. Sylvester’s College, where the school can now automate classroom teaching alongside admin tasks.

CodeGen states that, XOLO which is a unique education platform that goes beyond a Learning Management Solution (LMS). The world’s first unified application where electronic and personal content can both be integrated in real-time, on one screen with smart content delivery; students can now read, learn and write simultaneously.

A dream that instilled in me in the year 2010, is now accomplished by launching the XOLO Smart Classroom at St. Sylvester’s College. The great desire to ensure that our future generation is equipped with technology, for which a smart education platform is much needed is no longer a dream. My hope is that our students will be driven by this initiative to reach greater heights, with skills that are recognised internationally, and pass out as extraordinary citizens.” states, St. Sylvester’s College, Principal, Mr. T. R. S. Meetiyagoda.

XOLO Smart Classroom Teacher, Ms. Ramani Swamirajah explained, “The traditional methods we have been using, most of it felt ordinary and felt monotonous. I am very happy with this new system and it would definitely do well for our students’ education. The teachers can do more effective work within a short period of time and we expect an effective and quality education and outcome.”

XOLO Smart Classroom revolution was introduced by CodeGen in January 2017, together with Hon. Deputy Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva and the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka. The successful pilot project which was launched at the Sri Jayawardenepura Maha Vidayala Kotte, was later visited by Prime Minister Hon. XOLO Smart Classroom Feedback

TEACHER

Mathematics and Health Education teacher and teacher in charge of Cloud Smart Classroom, Punsandani Chanika Rathnayake said, “When comparing with the other students in school, the smart classroom students are performing well. They are very active and interested in studies. They come to school every day and they concentrate well on studies and extra-curricular activities. They take their tabs home for recharging every day. It is easy for us as we prepare for the lessons through presentations.”

“We make videos as well to conduct the lessons. The students download the lessons that we prepare through their tabs. The CodeGen Company trained us for about two weeks before starting the smart classroom. They gave us laptops to prepare lessons. The textbooks are uploaded to the tabs.  The school dialog wifi is filtered and students cannot access unnecessary websites. The Google search engine is also filtered. This system is not risky as some think as we have a backup system as well,” she said.

Civics Education teacher at Cloud Smart Classroom, Chandrika Kahandawala Arachchi said, “The children like this system because it is the new technology. They can download the lessons that we prepare through their tabs from anywhere if they have access to Internet. Students can participate in the day’s lesson even from home if they get absent to school. Assignments are done through the tabs. Some of these children got low marks last year in Grade six but now they have improved. I can see a huge change. If this system is introduced to all schools in Sri Lanka, it would be really great. We do a lot of homework after the introduction of this system. I go home after school and prepare the presentations through laptops. We do hard work but finally we are happy to see the outcome. These students get high marks. Compared to the previous years these children are also interested in doing the homework. The classroom management is easy now because all are attentive.”

STUDENT

A student from Grade Seven Smart Classroom, Ruvin Rashintha said that when he is free, he looks for educational related material on Google. “We do not need to buy exercise books and stationery now. It is very easy for us. Last year when our teacher told us to find pictures to paste, we needed to search in shops or cut from newspapers but now we can easily download from Google and paste it on the page in the tab. I like this system a lot. It encourages and motivates me to learn. I like coming to school every day now rather than before. We can download and read story books too during our leisure time,” he said.

Another Student mentioned that doing homework was not as boring as those days, its always a good time to learn with what XOLO has to offer.

PRINCIPAL

The Principal of Sri Jayawardenepura Maha Vidyalaya Kotte, Major D.A.D. Wanaguru said, “The idea of the Smart Classroom was first initiated by Deputy Minister, Harsha de Silva. ‎The Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer at CodeGen, Dr. Harsha Subasinghe gave us the knowledge about Smart Classrooms. The smart board which represents a blackboard and the tab system concept was introduced to us by Dr. Subasinghe, CEO of CodeGen. He always coordinates with us to make things easy. The tabs were provided to us by the CodeGen Company. After we started the Smart Classrooms, we monitored the progress of the students.”

“Students can now read and learn, while taking handwritten notes on the same screen. It is a unified learning solution for students with smart content delivery and unlimited content availability in multi-media form. After implementing this new education concept, we have seen a tremendous progress of children in the 7E Smart Classroom. This pilot project has proved that students are now much more enthusiastic to learn in the classroom or even at home with minimal supervision; increasing student attendance up to 92.5 percent, and an average 24 percent performance increase in subjects, and the highest individual average of 87 percent at the term examination was from the Smart Classroom,” he said.

Principal Wanaguru said, “We have blocked all unnecessary sites and applications. There is a control panel through which the CodeGen company, teachers of the Smart Classroom and myself monitor and manage. We cannot hide from new technologies, but instead we must get used to it and get along with it. Technology is sometimes misused by children but here they cannot, as we manage it. We should not make technology our slave, instead we should be the managers of it. Today children have made technology their slaves. They go to unnecessary websites and search for things and think that it is something great.”

Are we ready to welcome change?

635807769926152751-55185194_changeBuilding a better world for tomorrow is something we all hear on a day to day basis; from sustainable energy, organic food, autonomous transportation and eliminating poverty. These have all become buzz words of the present, and we are being told to innovate, try new things and to address these worldly matters – education steps in and the world evolves.

Are we conversant with the extraordinary generation we are trying to educate? A common dilemma for educational advocates- how to alter between what we were thought and what we need to teach. There is no right or wrong way, but there’s a definite need to change the mindset, endless opportunities and exponential growth expected.

If education is based on curriculums that were put forward years ago, it’s a good time to pause, think and reassure ourselves that we are not fighting an unattainable dream but flourishing with endless possibilities through constant innovation and self-discovery. Old is Gold, but New is even better!

 The digital age

In a world run by internet connectivity for all aspects of life, with information being freely available in just one click – we need to help students acquire accurate information. Google handles an estimated 1 billion search queries each day. Can a group of highly educated human brains add up to this infinite knowledge hub?

Creating an unceasing ecosystem around a student is important. Mentors, parents and the education institute should be aligned to support this digital age and help students think deeply, acquire relevant knowledge, make compassionate and responsible choices for revolutionary solutions. Modern schooling methodologies and innovative school management systems are plenty, are these systems just merely automating processes or complimenting the new mind-set of the students?

Real-life skills, effective speaking, strong vocabulary and an open mind will produce mature citizens who will try relentlessly, be prepared to accept failure and revolutionise the world with triumphs. Time to think, create, develop and collaborate with different minds –  joining forces for amazing discoveries is the new age. And by utilising the right technology, bridging the gap of the known and the unknown will be simpler. Merging the human brain and super-computing will spring unknown tomorrows, nevertheless inspiring ones.

A generation of solutionaries

We believe as educators, we are on top of what’s new, what’s trending and can be summed up pretty much as the old-school walking encyclopedia. Look at the evolution of the student you teach; The average 21 year old spends 5000 hours playing video games and that’s almost three quarter of a full year. Are we going to change the average student we teach or are we going to compliment and embrace this revolutionary earthling?

Researchers call this generation of students the ‘solutionaries’. They constantly search, look for answers, shortcuts and quick hacks. And there is nothing wrong with that, it is a perfect situation and a critical factor that will shift the education systems around the globe.

It’s time to change

The time has come for orthodox education systems to take a step back, not because it is useless, but because the world is shifting expeditiously and tomorrow is never going to be like today. Chasing new goals, evaluating outcomes and creative collaborations should be defining factors of modern education. The ‘new’ mindset will not care about how many books one should read to be an expert, but interact with intelligent intermediaries that surpass human knowledge for quick solutions – that’s where the world is heading and you should too.

Yes, it is vital to be qualified, to acquire knowledge and aid in this exponential transformation of the global marketplace, but will a multiple degree holder be the ideal and the only mastermind who will take on the world tomorrow?

Can technology spark curiosity?

It is believed that curiosity enhances learning and ignites new ideas among students. But, if we are not exposed to new thinking and new ways of doing things, learning becomes monotonous and teaching methods become a routine chore. To inspire students, it is vital that we keep their minds occupied with new and innovative experiences to step outside the conservative mindset. It is an era where we as educational specialists, should allow and introduce students constantly to out of the box mind mapping exercises and challenge them to be creative. It is only then, will one come to learn the optimum capacity and explore the endless possibilities in a highly competitive and advanced society.

An insightful interview published by EDtalks on how technology sparks curiosity;

“The importantt thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”  Albert Einstein
